Transparency

Bar Standards Board (BSB)

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has implemented new rules to enhance the transparency of barrister services. These rules require barristers to disclose their areas of practice, legal services offered, fee structures, and client rights before engagement.

Fee Structure and Transparency

Fees are fixed and agreed upon in advance with the solicitor or client. No additional charges will apply without prior written consent. A comprehensive record of all work—telephone calls, consultations, drafting, advice, and emails—will be maintained to ensure potential cost recovery where applicable.

Clients may also opt for an hourly billing model. Scope and thresholds are defined within the client care letter, ensuring there is no cost overrun without explicit client consultation and approval.

Fees depend on multiple factors including case complexity, preparation required, court jurisdiction (High Court vs County Court), and urgency.

Additional expenses may include travel or accommodation where necessary. All fees quoted are exclusive of VAT.

Written legal advice is typically provided within 14 days unless otherwise arranged. Case timelines are influenced by court delays, complexity, and third-party cooperation.

Guideline Fixed Fee Rates

County Court
  • Half day (3 hrs): £750
  • Full day (8 hrs): £2,000
  • Trial Refresher (6 hrs): £1,500
High Court
  • Half day (3 hrs): £1,350
  • Full day (8 hrs): £3,600
  • Trial Refresher (6 hrs): £2,700

Hourly Rates

  • High Court: £450 per hour
  • County Court: £250 per hour

These rates serve as a guideline for transparency and are subject to discussion. Final fees will be confirmed after consultation and are tailored to each client’s unique case requirements.
