Mian Sheraz Javaid taught Module 1: Law Practice and Procedure for International Arbitration to the second batch of candidates under the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb) Pakistan branch. The training at the Avari Hotel in Lahore was an excellent opportunity to interact with a diverse group of professionals, further cementing the growing importance of international arbitration education in Pakistan.

A Diverse and Dynamic Group of Participants

A wonderful mix of participants came together during the training session held at the Avari Hotel. The combination of law, business, engineering, and academics helped create a vibrant and dynamic environment for learning. Mian Sheraz Javaid added that such diversity helped even the discussion and interaction sessions cross disciplines in giving a value to international arbitration.

"Teaching this module to such a brilliant set of individuals from various walks of life was a truly rewarding experience," Sheraz shared. "The diverse professional backgrounds of the participants allowed for a wide range of discussions, which in turn enhanced our understanding of the complex nature of international arbitration."

This diversity is one of the most important reasons why Ciarb's training programs are effective. The fact that it combines people from all walks of life not only delves deeper into arbitration knowledge but also helps people have a holistic view of how international arbitration cuts across other disciplines. This makes for a more effective network of professionals who understand the intricacies of international arbitration and dispute resolution.

Module 1: Law Practice and Procedure for International Arbitration

Module 1, Law Practice and Procedure for International Arbitration, is part of the key core training provided by the Ciarb program. It trains attendees on arbitration basics, in particular, how arbitration is run and conducted: an international context approach to international arbitration. Some key areas to cover include legal aspects of arbitration, roles of the parties concerned, and what the practical process looks like to start and bring to a close an arbitration case.

The focus of the module is to provide participants with the necessary information regarding the procedures and practical steps that concern international arbitration. These include drafting arbitration agreements, comprehension of procedural rules, and handling actual hearings. Once participants have mastered the legal and procedural fundamentals, they become well prepared to take part in arbitration cases both at national and international levels.

For Sheraz, teaching this module was the pivotal opportunity for the sharing of so much he could with the arbitration professionals in the next generation. For years now, he had put his effort to hone and create expertise that provided valuable insight through real examples he could add towards the participant learning experience.

The Vision for Building Local Expertise

One of the most interesting things about this training initiative is its part of Ciarb Pakistan's ambition to realize a self-sustaining ecosystem of best-of-breed arbitration practitioners, not just within Pakistan but worldwide. The international arbitral process has increasingly become important for cross-border disputes, and now with this, the worth of Pakistan as an arbitration hub can be enjoyed. With rigorous training and certification, Ciarb is helping to define the future of arbitration in Pakistan and beyond.

Through these training programs, Sheraz and Ciarb Pakistan aim to build a cohort of experts who can not only contribute to local arbitration cases but also step into the international arena with confidence and expertise. Sheraz expressed his excitement at being part of this transformative journey, emphasising the importance of creating a local pool of professionals who can take Pakistan’s arbitration practice to the global stage.

“I am truly delighted to play a small role in this massive journey,” Sheraz commented. “Through these trainings, we hope to curate a pool of experts in Pakistan who will be at the forefront of international arbitration, helping to shape the future of the practice on the global stage.”

This vision towards building local expertise in international arbitration is already promising. As Ciarb Pakistan has been offering such training programs through its branch, it is building a pipeline of skilled professionals who are well prepared to deal with the complexities of international arbitration cases. It will not only add to Pakistan's reputation as an arbitration excellence center but also boost international recognition for Pakistani professionals.

Looking Ahead: More Training Programs to Come

The momentum generated by this recent training session is just the beginning. Mian Sheraz Javaid and the Ciarb Pakistan branch already have plans to offer several more such programs in the following year so that the pool of trained practitioners continues to grow. Such programs will cover various aspects of international arbitration, ranging from foundational modules to more specialized areas of practice. They hope to offer a smooth progression for professionals to upgrade their skills and qualifications.

The objective is not only to train a few such exceptional personalities but to build a self-sustaining community of practitioners who can continue to strive to augment their existing knowledge and contribute towards the continuous development of arbitration in Pakistan. This will be through the constant pursuit of mutual collaboration, innovation, and maintaining the standards of practice at all costs, which will ensure Pakistan keeps standing out as a global leader in arbitration.

Conclusion: A New Era of Arbitration in Pakistan

The second session of training conducted in Lahore with Sheraz proved to be another exciting milestone toward the development of local expertise in international arbitration. With the hard work of Ciarb Pakistan and professionals such as Sheraz, Pakistan is well on its way to becoming a hub for arbitration excellence.

As these practitioners, fresh from their trainings, begin to mature and expand, it will trickle into the psyche not only within Pakistan but, globally, amongst international arbitration's practitioner community as well. As investment in the form of quality education and professionalism will continue further brighten arbitration in Pakistan by helping the nation move forward.
